Why Amazon Restrictions Created So Much Confusion Around Mylar Bags
Much of the fear surrounding Mylar Bags isn’t due to any official government regulation but rather because sellers woke up one morning to discover all their products had disappeared overnight from Amazon without warning. What took place was an unexpected disruption, and disruption happens quickly.
Amazon does business differently than any other marketplace. Amazon employs a large number of automated systems for scanning product listings, images, and text using keywords to identify possible violations of the site’s policies. If a product is flagged as violating an Amazon policy, then that item can be removed from the site without notice, regardless of whether or not the seller has been given a violation notice. This is really how Mylar Bags have ended up in trouble.
The issue is not with the product itself, but rather how customers have come to associate Mylar Bags with a number of different markets such as cannabis and vaping. As a result of this association, sellers began to view certain types of Mylar bags as ‘billboard’ ads to promote cannabis and vape products. When Amazon’s automated systems began seeing these patterns, they started increasing the number of violations for Mylar bags.
From an outside perspective, it would appear that Mylar Bags have been banned. Sellers are no longer able to relist their products on the site, their appeals process does not yield consistent results, and thus sellers think that there is a blanket ban against Mylar Bags. In reality, Amazon is selectively filtering out Mylar bags based solely upon the risk associated with each product and has not actually put a blanket ban on the use of Mylar bags on the Amazon platform.
This situation created an enormous ripple effect as buyers and sellers started sharing their experiences through forums and social media regarding Mylar Bags creating a significant change in the overall narrative about the use of Mylar bags. To illustrate, many compliant product listings still continue to perform without issue even though the public believes that Mylar bags are no longer allowed to be sold on Amazon.
It is imperative that sellers understand the distinction between Mylar Bags being banned and Mylar Bags being selectively filtered based on perceived risk in order for them to avoid Mylar bags in the future. Once sellers see that distinction clearly, they will have a much easier time navigating Amazon’s rules regarding Mylar bags bans going forward.
