Choosing the Right Mylar Bag for Long Term Food Storage

 


Simply sealing dry goods in a bag and putting them away in Long-Term Food Storage will not keep the food fresh. The materials that make up a Mylar bag are one of the biggest factors affecting how long food will last.


Mylar is constructed of several layers, each of which serves to block oxygen, moisture, and light from affecting the contents inside the bag. As time passes, the thin material will become brittle and will no longer be able to provide adequate protection for food stored inside.


When you choose a Mylar bag to use for long-term food storage, you should select a Mylar bag that is thicker than the average Mylar bag. Thicker Mylar bags will have better puncture resistance, stronger seals, and will last longer when handled or stored with other bags.
