Choosing the Right Storage Bag for Long-Term Protection

Selecting a storage bag that will serve your needs for the long term can be very rewarding. The choice of bag can also affect your food storage or product packaging with respect to the overall freshness, shelf life, and quality of that product. Two bags many people commonly evaluate for food storage versus packaging needs are Mylar bags and vacuum bags. Most people, however, do not understand how dissimilar the performance of these two bags really is.

Mylar bags are made from multiple layers of various materials engineered to block the transfer of oxygen, moisture, light, and odor from the outside of the bag to the inside of the bag. Mylar bags are perfect for long-term storage when used in conjunction with oxygen absorbers. Foods placed in Mylar bags may have a shelf life of years rather than months. Due to their ability to preserve food for long periods of time, Mylar bags are widely used for emergency food storage, bulk dry goods, and sensitive products that require stable storage conditions over time.

Vacuum bags use a different method of removal of air from the bag containing an item. By removing air from around the item placed in a vacuum bag, one can significantly slow down the rate of oxidation and freezer burn; this is especially true for refrigerated or frozen foods. The drawback to using vacuum bags for food storage is that they are still capable of allowing light and oxygen to transfer through the material wall of the bag over the period of storage; therefore, all food products stored for the long term and/or all food products that require maximal barrier protection for storage are not best served with vacuum bags.

The best bag for your intended use will depend on the length of time you expect to store the product and the level of protection required to maintain the integrity/quality of the product. Vacuum bags are a great choice for everyday food storage or temporary use of food; however, Mylar bags are a better choice for maximum durability, longevity, and environmental protection.
